What’s the best part of Halloween season?  The candy? The costumes?  The return of Pumpkin Spice Lattes?  For me, it’s all about the spooky movies.  Every October 1st, Yay Dude’s resident Movie Dude (that’s me) posts Donovan’s creepy “Season of the Witch” on social media for all to hear of the official opening of spooky season.  Then I compose my list of scary movies to watch in prepartation for All Hallows Eve.  Some classic. Some not-so-classic.  Here are three of my favorites:

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Let me start this off by telling you – Micheal Myers is NOT in this one.  No one was there to tell me this when I rented a pirate copy from a Bait Shop in Mountain Park, OK in 1985.   I then spent most of the movie wondering when he was going to pop out from behind a bush.  However, just because one of the most famous slashers of them all is NOT in this movie – don’t overlook this very weird Halloween film. You see, the makers of “Silver Shamrock” Halloween masks are up to no good.  So naturally, an ER doctor, Tom Atkins (Lethal Weapon) is on the case.  He’ll see if he can love, drink, and snoop his way to saving Halloween and the world.

Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

A horror movie favorite of mine – the anthology film.  Trick ‘r Treat consists of five separate stories on Halloween night surrounding a local Halloween festival.  The stories interweave ever so slightly and boasts a cast that includes Dylan Baker (The Good Wife), Anna Paquin (True Blood), and the amazing Bryan Cox (Succession) as a cranky old fart of the highest order.

ParaNorman (2012)

What does a movie “look” like?  Weird question, I know.  However, recent movies like Dune are so, SO beautiful on screen.   LAIKA Studio’s stop-motion animated ParaNorman is no exception.  Norman is the “weird” kid in town, mostly because he can see and speak to ghosts.  Add in some unexpected witches and zombies and it’s a hell of fun little film.    Voices of Anna Kendrick, John Goodman, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin) are just part of the star-studded voice cast.
