For so many people, life-changing events occur with no warning. No preparation. That was the case for UCO football defensive back Derek Loccident on September 9, 2018. In the early morning hours of that day, Derek lost his left foot and about six inches of his lower leg while taking a shortcut past a train in Oklahoma City.In the days that followed, Derek struggled. What would his life look like? UCO Head Football Coach Nick Bobeck was in Derek’s corner and would do anything he could to help. Eventually, there was occupational therapy. Physical Therapy.
Then in January 2019, Derek was fitted for a prosthetic with Scott Sabolich Prosthetics and Research in Oklahoma City. By June of 2019, Derek competed in the UCO Endeavor games, less than one year after losing his leg. It’s worth saying again –less than a year. He ran the 100m in a little over 13 seconds. He showed heart. He showed perseverance. He set an example for every other person who doesn’t see that life-changing event coming.
